Joint Shrub Planting at Reaside Forest Garden: Ukrainian Community and Local Residents Support the Growth of Birmingham’s Green Spaces

On 14 March, Moseley for Ukraine, in partnership with the charity Fruit and Nut Village, held another environmental volunteering session at Reaside Forest Garden — a green area between the River Rea and Clevedon Road in Balsall Heath. The event continued ongoing work to develop natural spaces and ecological corridors in the southern neighbourhoods of Birmingham.

Supporting the Urban Ecosystem

During the session, participants planted young shrubs, prepared the soil, and expanded the planting areas. These activities help to increase biodiversity, support natural habitats, and contribute to improving air quality.

Collaboration Between the Ukrainian Community and Local Residents

Ukrainians and residents from nearby neighbourhoods joined the activity. Their shared efforts demonstrated how important community involvement is for improving the local environment. The enthusiasm and contribution of everyone involved became a positive example of cooperation between different communities.

The participation of Ukrainians in such events helps build trust, strengthen partnerships, and shows their willingness to contribute to the development of the city.

An Atmosphere of Cooperation and Support

The event had a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Participants exchanged tips, helped each other with tools, and worked together at a steady pace. The good weather and the open green space added to the positive and enjoyable experience.

This kind of atmosphere reinforces the sense of shared purpose, makes volunteering enjoyable, and encourages people to take part in future initiatives.

Long‑Term Impact

The trees and shrubs planted will have a lasting impact on the area in the coming years: supporting the local ecosystem, improving the appearance of the space, and contributing to a healthier urban environment. Organisers emphasise that such local initiatives play an important role in creating resilient and attractive urban green spaces.

Moseley for Ukraine and Fruit and Nut Village plan to continue their collaboration and organise similar activities in the future.
