The UK government has announced changes to the immigration rules that significantly impact the stay extension procedure for Ukrainians. The main purpose of these updates is to provide more time for planning and submitting applications under the Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) scheme.
Application Regulations and New Deadlines
The main change is the introduction of a 90-day window for submitting documents. This rule officially takes effect on April 8, 2026. From then on, applicants will be able to submit documents for their first or second UPE extension within 90 days prior to their current visa expiration date.
It is worth noting that until April 8, 2026, the current restriction remains in force. Applications submitted earlier than 28 days before the current permit expires may be rejected or returned by the Home Office without consideration.
Impact on New Permit Duration
Early application submission under the new system will not result in a loss of days of stay. Any remaining time on your current visa will be automatically added to the new permit duration. Thus, submitting an application at the beginning of the 90-day window is safe and recommended to avoid technical delays.
The visa extension process under the UPE scheme remains free for all categories of applicants.
Rules for Minors and Persons Reaching Age 18
For children under the age of 18, the principle of deadline synchronization applies. This means a child’s visa duration may be shortened to end simultaneously with the visa of a parent or legal guardian.
If a child has already turned 18 at the time of application for a second extension, they are considered an adult applicant. In this case, the individual receives a standard extension duration without any reductions provided for minors.
Recommendations for Current Scheme Participants
To determine the correct time for application submission, you must check the date in the Valid until field in your UKVI online account.
If your visa expires before April 8, 2026, you should submit your application within the 28-day period. If it expires after April 8, 2026, you can take advantage of the new 90-day window.
Please note that submission for a second extension (for a 24-month duration) is not yet open. Follow official updates on the GOV.UK government portal. Individuals who have already submitted applications should await a decision; their rights to work and reside are protected by Section 3C leave provisions.
