What Is a GHIC Card and Why It Matters When Traveling Abroad

Updated: Mar 5

The GHIC (UK Global Health Insurance Card) allows you to access public healthcare abroad in countries that have an agreement with the United Kingdom. It’s not an insurance policy — it’s a document that confirms that if you fall ill, you’ll receive medical care just like a local resident of that country.

This card tells hospitals abroad:

✅ It helps reduce the cost of medical care while traveling.

✅ It only works in public hospitals, not private ones.

✅ It covers only necessary and urgent treatment that cannot wait until you return home.

❌ It does not cover travel back to the UK, air ambulances, or private clinics.

A simple example:

If you’re on holiday in Europe and break a leg, catch an infection, or experience another acute illness — with a GHIC, you’ll be treated in a public hospital and charged the same as locals.

But if you want a private room, a dental cleaning, or a scheduled operation — the card won’t help.

How to Apply for a GHIC Card

1. Visit the official NHS website: Apply for GHIC

2. Check if you’re eligible — for example, legal residence in the UK.

3. Prepare your details: full name, date of birth, UK address, and your National Insurance number (or Health & Care number if needed).

4. Fill out the online form and add family members if needed — spouse or children.

5. Submit your application. You’ll receive an email within ~24 hours with confirmation or a request for additional documents.

6. If approved, your GHIC card will be sent by post to your UK address — usually within 15 working days.

7. If the card won’t arrive before your trip, you can request a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) — a temporary document.

8. If you can’t apply online (e.g., no NI number), you can apply by post using a special form.

The GHIC card is a simple yet essential document that can support you in unexpected situations abroad. While it’s not a substitute for travel insurance, it allows you to access necessary public healthcare in partner countries without excessive costs.

Planning a trip? Take care of your health in advance — apply for your GHIC card and travel with peace of mind.
