What is Child Benefit?

Child Benefit is a form of government assistance for individuals responsible for raising children in the United Kingdom. It is a regular payment that can be received weekly or monthly (once every four weeks).

Parents or guardians are entitled to Child Benefit if:

  • child under 16 years of age

  • a child/young person under the age of 20, if they are continuing full-time education or approved education or training.

Ukrainians who have arrived under the Homes for Ukraine, Ukraine Family Scheme or Ukraine Extension Scheme are entitled to Child Benefit immediately, without a waiting period.

How do I apply for Child Benefit?

Online submission

The easiest way is to apply online through HMRC. You will need to have:

  • National Insurance number (if applicable),

  • child's document (passport or birth certificate — can be added later if not available now),

  • bank details.

Submission by post

If you are unable to apply online, fill out form CH2. It must be sent to the Child Benefit Office.

Backdating: Is it possible to receive retroactive payments?

Yes. Payments can usually be "rewound" for a maximum of 3 months, even if you submit your application later.

What changes in circumstances must be reported?

You must notify HMRC if any of the following changes:

1. Address of residence in the United Kingdom

2. Travelling outside the UK

  • If you are travelling for more than 8 weeks, please notify us.

  • If you move abroad for more than 1 year, payments may be suspended.

    3. Changes in a child's education

  • the child moves from GCSE to college,

  • interrupts studies,

  • changes their place of study.

4. Changes in income

This is particularly important if one of the parents earns more than £60,000 per year, as this may result in a High Income Child Benefit Charge — a tax on the benefit received.

5. Change of bank details

Account number, bank code, change of bank.

6. Changes in family composition

  • birth of another child,

  • termination of guardianship,

  • child no longer living with you.

What happens if you apply but do NOT receive the money?

This is very important and useful.

Even if you decide NOT to receive payments into your account but apply for Child Benefit, you will still receive:

1. National Insurance Credits

They count towards your years of service for the state pension. These credits are accrued until the child reaches the age of 12. This means that the time spent caring for your child counts towards your future pension.

This is especially useful if you:

  • not working,

  • work part-time,

  • are on maternity leave,

  • you do not want to receive the payment itself due to your partner's high income.

    2. Access to other benefits for Ukrainians

If your status allows access to public funds, you may be eligible for:

  • Universal Credit

  • Housing Benefit

  • Carer’s Allowance

  • Disability Living Allowance / PIP

  • Free School Meals

  • 30 hours free childcare (under certain conditions)

Each programme has separate conditions — they must be checked individually.

Conclusion

Child Benefit is not just financial support, but also a way to maintain your pension rights in the UK. It is essential to apply, even if you do not wish to receive the payment itself. The main thing is to remember to notify HMRC of any important changes.
